Since 2007, Roger Stanton has served St. Mary’s College of Maryland’s psychology department, first as an assistant professor and then as associate professor after being tenured in 2013.
Roger Stanton holds a Ph.D. from Indiana University, where he double-majored in psychology and cognitive science. While at Indiana University he gained extensive training in mathematical modeling and statistical analysis. During his time at Indiana University, Roger Stanton concentrated his research on human category learning.
Roger Stanton has centered the majority of his research on testing a variety of theories of category learning. His research primarily involves collecting behavioral data from experiments and then testing the ability of formal mathematical models to account for the data collected. A major focus for Roger Stanton is a systematic investigation of reported dissociations of category learning. As part of this investigation, Roger Stanton was able to provide evidence that was inconsistent with the multiple-systems approach. Furthermore, Roger Stanton was able to show that the results are consistent with a single-system model of category learning.
Roger Stanton has published many peer-reviewed articles and presented at conferences. Notably, he has coauthored articles and conference presentations with undergraduate students. Currently, Roger Stanton supervises undergraduate research assistants in his Concepts and Categories Laboratory.
Since joining the faculty at St. Mary’s, Roger Stanton has taught courses in cognitive science, cognitive psychology, research methods, and statistics. Additionally, Roger Stanton has been an advisor for dozens of senior honors projects and has continually received favorable evaluation scores. Dr. Stanton is known for his natural ability to simplify complex concepts and for encouraging students to become involved in research projects.
Roger Stanton has served as the chair of the Institutional Review Board in addition to serving on several departmental and college-wide committees. Additionally, Roger Stanton was the statistical consultant for the psychology department.
Roger Stanton lives in Maryland with his wife, Brandi.
